A common climber, it nests in tree hollows in the garden. We can tell the male from the female by the red spot on the back of his head; the young have a red crown and neck. It mainly feeds on insect larvae and seeds, as well as fruits in the autumn.

It is the same size as a sparrow. The male has a pink belly and a green back; the female is an inconspicuous grey-brown. The male is found here all year round, while the female and her young fly to the Mediterranean for the winter.

European stag beetle Lucanus cervus

You can spot this, one of our largest beetles, in June and July. The adult beetle lives for just a few weeks, but the larva grows in rotting wood and the stumps of deciduous trees for several years.

goldfinch Carduelis carduelis

This beautifully coloured finch-like bird often builds its nest in fruit trees. In winter, it can often be seen in the sycamore trees in the parks of Malá Strana, from where it collects seeds.

The male duck is more colourful than the other duck species, the female duck is a subtle brown coloured. It flies to the garden pond from the Vltava River.

peacock Pavo cristatus

The peacock, originally from India and Sri Lanka, lives in our garden all year round. The male is much more brightly coloured than the female. The male lives with a „harem“ of females. Did you know that a peacock’s tail is not a „real tail“? It is not made up of tail feathers, but upper tail coverts.
